When couples inquire about booking DC wedding photography with me, one of the first topics of discussion is why engagement photography sessions are important. Even if you know the value of a photograph expressing the love you share with your soon-to-be-spouse, there is more to why you should have engagement photos with your wedding photographer.
I want to know you.
First, I want to meet you. I want to know you, and I want you to know me. I want to know what makes you tick, what makes you smile, and what makes you melt into each others’ arms. I would prefer we meet up for a drink or two and then start with the photo process butttttttt there’s not always time for that. If you’re game, I’m game. Then, we realllly get comfortable with one another and capture some AMAZING photos. Being relaxed makes a huge difference during your engagement session, which in turn makes your wedding day photos go oh-so-smoothly. See the next point.
This is your trial run.
I want to see the two of you in front of a camera before the wedding day. You wouldn’t walk down the aisle in a dress you’ve never tried on. You wouldn’t order a cake you’ve never tasted. You wouldn’t hire a “DJ” who says, “Yeah, I’ve got an iPod. I’ve played music before.”
Let’s get out there and snap some photos as a rehearsal for your big day. The engagement session eliminates wedding day variables for a stress-free, efficient photography experience. That means more relaxing for you and your spouse with your family and friends! Let’s dance that night away!
These are not photos for you.
Believe it or not, these photos aren’t for you. They aren’t even for your Save-the-Dates. The session is for your kids and grandkids. Photos of just the two of you, in non-wedding gear, are an expression of the two of you, this moment in time, and the love you had for each other at the point in your lives. Your children and grandchildren will be able to feel your love through the story the photographs tell. This is your legacy. These are your memories. How do you want to be remembered?
What’s next?
When should we schedule this? Typical time-frame for engagement photos is 4-8 months from your wedding date. If sending “Save the Dates” you will want to wait no later than 6 months before the big day. Keep in mind I shoot in all seasons. I’m absolutely crazy about snow! Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, I’m outside capturing love!
What should I wear for my engagement session?
Dress for a casual date out. You want to be comfortable but wearing more than yoga pants. (I live in those bad boys.) Some clients gravitate toward bold patterns while others prefer a softer style. My goal is to capture you, so dress like you! Feel free to email me your wardrobe selections. I will guide you through the entire process! Also, check my Pinterest boards for inspiration.
Add more personality to your photos by choosing the location of your engagement session! I love when a couple suggests having their photos taken in a spot that is sentimental to them. Let’s tailor your session to match your interests. Are you into biking? Horseback riding? Snowboarding? Boating? Fishing? Hiking? Star gazing? You pick the theme, and I capture the two of you in a guided, relaxed environment. If you need suggestions, I am here to help!
